\* Gilibert, Jean Emmanuel (1741-1814), French botanist, physician and politician, born 21 Jun 1741 in Saint-Clair (Lyon), studied medicine in Montpellier 1760-1763, at Chazay-d'Azergues 1766-1768, through the intercession of A. von Haller and A. Gouan went to Lithuania (Grodno and Vilnius) 1775-1783, where at the behest of Stanislas II (King of Poland) he was to modernize teaching of natural history and medicine, returned to Lyon 1783 and practiced medicine, played an active role in the French Revolution, elected "Girondist" mayor of Lyon 1793, briefly imprisoned, returned to teaching 1796-1803, died 2 Sep 1814 in Lyon.
**Abbreviated name**: *Gilib.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Gilib.*\]
#### Herbarium and types
[[Collection LY|LY]]?, [[Collection KRAM|KRAM]], [[Collection KW|KW]]; France (Lyon, leg. 1802): [[Collection P|P]]-JU. It is questionable whether the Gilibert collections at Kiev ([[Collection KW|KW]]) are complete and they may have been transfered to Krakow ([[Collection KRAM|KRAM]]). Magnin stated that Gilibert's herbaria were given, at least in part, to Alexis Jordan (1814-1897). If so, these specimens are to be sought in [[Collection LY|LY]].

#### Note
- (1) Four of Gilibert's works (TL-2/1, nrs. 2012-2015) are listed in the Appendix V *Opera Utique Oppressa* of the 2006 Vienna *Code*. Names appearing in these works in the ranks specified at the end of each listing (species and infraspecific taxa, in Gilibert's case) are not to be accepted as validly published. This list was established by action of the Tokyo Congr. (1993) and first appeared in the 1994 Tokyo *Code*.
- (2) Christine Barker (Kew) pointed out several typographical errors associated with TL-2/1, nrs. 2013 and 2015, involving the Latin word *Exercitium* (exercise), its plural *Exercitia*, and its abbreviation, *Exerc*. In nr. 2013, the abbreviation "*Excerc*." should be "*Exerc*." In nr. 2015, the first title word "*Excercitia*" should be corrected to "*Exercitia*" and the abbreviation "*Excerc*." should be corrected to "*Exerc*.".
- (3) A number of titles reprinted in *Syst. pl. Eur.*... 1785-1787, 7 vols. (TL-2/1, nr. 2014) have subsequently been analyzed in more detail in the later volumes of TL-2. These include:
(a) M. Alphonin, *Usum hist. nat.*... 1766 (TL-2/Suppl. 1, nr. 19.316), "Reprinted in... ed. J.E. Gilibert, *Syst. pl. Eur.* 5: i-xix. 1786".
(b) J.A. Murray, *Vindic. nom. triv.*... 1782 (TL-2/3, nr. 6574), "*Reprinted*:... in Gilibert, *Syst. pl. Europ.* 5: xlvii-lxxv. 1786".

**Notes**
*Co-author* \[in part\]: Lortet, Mme. Clémence (née Richard) (1772-1835), see TL-2/3: 164.
*Publ*.: 1809, h.t., p. \[i\], t.p., \[i\]-viii, \[1\]-88, 1 map (unnumb., uncol., fold., Lyon & vicinity). *Copy*: BM.
*Note*: (1) Earlier Stafleu & Cowan (TL-2/3: 164) wrote "Clémence Lortet contributed to publications by \[J.-B.\] Balbis and Gilibert; published – through Gilibert – a *Calendrier de Flore* (1809)...." Their statement is mostly correct; she contributed to the Lyon portion, at least, of this calender, which is confirmed on p. vi where Gilibert mentions the zealous way in which Mme. Lortès (sic) botanized regularly around Lyon and how they pooled their data on flowering times. (2) Lyon data are presented on p. 1-48, 61-62 (as a suppl.) and 63-88 (index); Grodno data (gathered by Gilibert alone) on p. 49-60.
