Bern), attended primary school in Langenthal and Gymnasium in Burgdorf (Kt. Bern), went to Berlin 1845 to study chemistry and pharmacy, worked in a pharmacy in Kt. Solothurn 1847-1849, studied botany in Geneva 1849-1850 and went to Strasbourg 1850, and then to Heidelberg 1851-1852 where he studied chemistry, Dr. Sci.
