Fernow, Bernhard Eduard (1851-1923), German-born American forester and dendrologist, born 7 Jan 1851 in Inowraclaw (Hohensalza), Posen (Prussia, now Poland), attended forest acad. in Münden 1870-1873, studied law in Königsberg from 1874, came to the U.S.A. in 1876, married an American citizen, naturalized 1883, chief, Division of Forestry, U.S.D.A., Washington, D.C. 1886-1898, LL.D. 1896 Univ. of Wisconsin at Madison, dir. of the first American school of forestry at Cornell Univ., Ithaca, New York 1898-1903, later, from 1907, dean of the first Canadian school of forestry in Toronto, died 6 Feb 1923 in Toronto.
