Kiel 1801; supervisor university hospital 1802; adjunct philos. faculty Kiel 1803, extraord. prof. id. 1804; Dr. med. 1805; in charge of the botanical garden 1810; extraord. professor of medicine 1811; son of Georg Heinrich Weber. **Abbreviated name**: *F. Weber* \[standard form in IPNI: *F.Weber*\] #### Herbarium and types Part of the Friedrich Weber hepatics may have come to [[Collection S|S]] via the herbarium J.G.C. Lehmann (inf. R. Grolle). Other Friedrich Weber material is reported from [[Collection HBG|HBG]](algae), [[Collection KIEL|KIEL]] (prob. destroyed) and [[Collection M|M]] (bryophytes); W. Nolte (1826) states that the herbaria of F. Weber and D.M.H. Mohr were included in the herbarium of Georg Heinrich Weber (1752-1858; father). – P. Isoviita sent us a summary of his information on the Weber and Mohr herbarium given below. *Note by P. Isoviita* on the Weber and Mohr herbarium: In the beginning of the 1800's, F. Weber and D. Mohr (q.v.) built a large herbarium at Kiel; it was particularly rich in cryptogams and also contained materials from G.H. Weber (see, e.g., Nolte 1826). From F. Weber and Mohr publications (*Index Mus. pl. crypt.*, 1803, *Naturh. Reise Schweden*, 1804, *Bot. Taschenb.*, 1807) it appears that the herbarium included specimens of many other botanists as well: e.g., E. Acharius (also nearly 150 species of lichens, including numerous spcies described in his *Meth. lich. suppl., *1803; see *Naturh. Reise Schweden* 77-78, 1804), O.C. Blandow, S.E. Bridel, J. Dickson, H. Flörke, P. Forsskål (Forsk. Hb.), J. Hedwig, C. Linnaeus e.g. 15 algae Herb. Linn., apparently given by Acharius; (cf. *Naturh. Reise* 78), F.K. Mertens, A.W. Roth, K.F. Schultz, C.F. Schwägrichen, J.C. Starke, O. Swartz, C.P. Thunberg, J.F. Trentepohl, D. Turner and G. Wahlenberg (evidently rich materials). Nolte (1826) still used the herbarium Weberianum, but after G.H. Weber's death (1828) it seems to have been split up. According to a manuscript by Nolte, G.H. Weber's herbarium was purchased by F.C. Martens (1803-1870), apothecary at Neustadt in Holstein (Fischer-Benzon in Prahl 1890: 61); this collection might have contained the vascular plants of the combined Weber and Mohr herbarium, but nothing is known of its later fate or of its possible link to the following history. The bryophytes (and evidently many other cryptogams) were acquired by J.B.W. Lindenberg; his collaborator C.G.D. Nees von Esenbeck (*Naturgesch. eur. Leberm.* 2: 300. 1836) mentions Lindenberg as "der Besitzer der Weber'schen Sammlung". Lindenberg's hepatic herbarium (at [[Collection W|W]]) still contains some F. Weber specimens, but the majority of his types are in J.G.C. Lehmann's (collaborator of Lindenberg) herbarium at [[Collection S|S]] (through O.W. Sonder and J. Ångström; see Taxon 29: 282. 1980 and Sv. bot. Tidskr. 9: 395. 196 respectively). Some Hb. Web. specimens in the Lehmann herbarium bear the annotation "ded. Lindenberg 1830", and I suppose that the other specimens involved were similarly given to Lehmann. After Lindenberg's death, the moss herbarium of D. Mohr went to K. Müller of Halle (österr. bot. Z. 6: 200, TL-2/3: 545); this information evidently refers to Weber and Mohr's combined moss herbarium. Saelan et al. (1890: 10) state that Müller's herbarium includes Weber Mohr's collection. Müller's moss herbarium was destroyed at [[Collection B|B]] in 1943, but some Weber et Mohr and Mohr mosses still exist at [[Collection JE|JE]], mostly from K. Schliephacke's herbarium, who received them from Müller (inf. F.K. Meyer). P. Sydow (Deutsche Botaniker-Kalender für 1899) even claims that a "Mohr" herbarium was owned by Schliephacke. This is possible. Müller scarcely had much interest in Weber et Mohr's European specimens, and he had a close contact with Schliephacke (who edited Müller's posthumous Genera and provided our Brotherus with many Müller duplicates). In 1855, Lindenberg's lichen collection, containing "zahlreiche Originalexemplare von Acharius" (evidently from Weber and Mohr's herbarium, cf. above), was also announced for sale by Sonder (Bot. Zeit. 13: 904. 1855); its later whereabouts are unknown, but many lichen specimens of Weber and Mohr are at [[Collection MB|MB]] (inf. A. Henssen and T. Ahti). The algae of the Weber and Mohr herbarium are said to be in [[Collection HBG|HBG]], "als Bestandteil des Herbarium Lindenberg" (Heering 1902: 353; see TL-2/3: 544). Some very scattered materials have been at [[Collection KIEL|KIEL]] (probably destroyed in World War II) and may be at [[Collection M|M]] (Sayre; possibly a few specimens, inf. H. Hertel). #### Bibliography and biography ADB 41: 294-295; Backer p. 664; Barnhart 3: 468 (b. 3 Aug 1781, d. 21 Mar 1823); BM 5: 2277; Bossert p. 429; De Toni 1: cxxiv, 2: cxxi; DTS 1: 320; Frank 3 (Anh.): 111; GR p. 53 (correct date of death 1 Mar 1823), cat. p. 73; Herder p. 484 \[index\]; Jackson p. 243, 428; KR p. 752 ("Frederic"); LS 28432-28437; Moebius p. 458 \[index\]; PR 15, 2287, 10029-10036, ed. 1: 11004-11014; Rehder 1: 46, 2: 6; SO 2638a; SY p. 17, 22, 23, 32, 38, 46, 49; TL-1/1393-1397; TL-2/602, 1473, 12.675, see R.A. Wikström cites Weber and Mohr as the authors and internal evidence speaks in favor of their joint authorship, for example a number of the names of new taxa mentioned in this index (of Weber and Mohr's combined cryptogamic herbarium) were validly published elsewhere, with Weber, Mohr, or Weber et Mohr as authors. *Publ*.: Aug-Dec 1803, p. \[1\]-10. *Copies*: G, LINN. – Consists of 5 numbered sheets. – See also SY p. 17. – The material mentioned includes specimens collected by Weber and Mohr in Sweden Mai-Jul 1803. ##### n.16.895.
