### Author
Reichenbach, Carl \[Karl\] Ludwig \[Freiherr\] von (1788-1869), German (Württemberg) botanist, chemist and industrialist; studied at Tübingen 1807-1809, specialized in industrial carbonization; from 1822-1839 in charge of the mining industry and metallurgical plants at Blansko (Moravia), studying the chemical products of carbonization as well as the geology of the region; from 1839 residing at his property Reisenberg near Wien as private scientist, developing e.g. his "Odlehre" of physiological magnetism.
**Abbreviated name**: *C. Rchb.* \[standard form in IPNI: *C.Rchb.*\]
#### Herbarium and types
[[Collection AWH|AWH]] (includes herbarium F.W. Sieber (1785-1844); forms nucleus of the Van Heurck herbarium). Correspondence in SIA; letters to D.F.L. von Schlechtendal at [[Collection HAL|HAL]]; the main part of the Reichenbach papers is in the collection of manuscripts of the Technische Museum, Wien (Hss. Gruppe X, Nr. 192-343, 405-408).
#### Note
R.'s main works on his "Od" concept were "Odisch-magnetische Briefe" (1853) and "Der sensitive Mensch" (1854). The theory ("od" as the carrier of all formative forces in life) is now only of historical interest. His – only – botanical work "Die Pflanzenwelt in ihren Beziehungen zur Sensitivität und zum Ode" Wien 1858 (ed. 2. 1909) deals with this same theme of physiological magnetism. Reichenbach gave the etymology of the word *Od* as follows: "Wodan bezeichnet im Altgermanischen den Begriff des Alldurchdringen, daraus Wuodin, Odon, Odin, die alldurchdringende Kraft. *Od* ist somit das Lautzeichen für einer alles in der Natur mit unaufhaltsamer Kraft durchdringenden und durchströmenden Kraft, durchdringenden und durchströmenden Dynamid." (see Bauer, 1911, p. 13). There is no known family relationship with H.G.L. von Reichenbach, who stemmed from a Thuringian family. See R. v. Reichenbach et al. (1869) for further details; and D.F.L. von Schlechtendal, Bot. Zeit. 16: 81-82. 1858 for a review of his 1858 publ.
