### Author
\* Barbey, William (1842-1914), Swiss philanthropist and botanist, attended secondary schools in Genève, studied at the École centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris 1862, joined the family firm Barbey, Richard et Cie (New York), travelling to and from New York, made a first trip to Buenos Aires 1868, married Caroline Boissier, daughter of Edmond Boissier 1896, from then on devoting himself to botany, travelled to the Balearic Islands and Valencia in 1880 with Boissier, Burnat and Leresche, the first of many botanical trips in the Mediterranean area, set up the Herbier Boissier as a research institute after the death of Boissier in 1885, located in Chambésy, promoting exploration and publication of systematic research in addition to his many non-botanical philanthropic enterprises as a deeply motivated protestant (Église évangélique libre).

#### Herbarium and types
[[Collection G|G]] (based on his acquisition of the herbarium of G.F. Reuter, developing the Herbier Boissier collections through the acquisition of the Müller Arg., Duby, Fuckel, Bornet and Stephani collections. After Barbey's death the collections of the Herbier Boissier were transferred to the University of Genève, later transferred to the Conservatoire botanique, Chambésy, Genève. Caroline Boissier (1847-1918), daughter of Pierre Edmond Boissier, married W. Barbey 17 Sep 1869. "This marriage was the starting point of a complete new direction in his activities. Following his father-in-law, he turned to botany. In order to have a basis for his botanical systematic studies he bought for comparison the herbarium of G.F. Reuter, longtime associate and collaborator of Boissier." \[J. Briquet, 1940, p. 24\]. Caroline Boissier was born in 1847 and died 18 Jan 1918 at Chambésy.
