Aberdeen Univ., asst. to prof. of Botany, Aberdeen Univ. 1894-1895, Indian Medical Service 1897-1898, herb. curator, Calcutta Botanic Gardens 1898-1905, then superintendent and dir. of the Botanical Survey of India 1906-1925, prof. of Botany, Medical College, Calcutta, librarian and asst. secretary of the Linnean Society (London) 1924-1929, F.L.S. 1901, died 21 Jan 1945 in Strathpeffer (Ross).
