Richard (father and son) is incorporated in the herbier général of the British herbarium \[[[Collection BM|BM]]\]. It contains many Richard types, but A. Richard in particular worked also on collections that came directly to Paris. Since these are all incorporated in the general herbarium it is usually not difficult to locate the types. The specimens from the Richard herbarium are easily recognizable by the labels. – The herbarium contained the original set of Sagra plants used for A. Richard's *Essai d'une flore de l'Île de Cuba*, as well as the first set of Dillon and Petit plants from Abyssinia. An abstract of this mémoire, as read before the Academy, appeared in Le Globe of 11 July 1829 on p. 438 \[n.v.\]. On 4 July 1831 the preprint was presented to the Academy (Procès Verbaux 9: 656. 1921) but this cannot have constituted publication for Richard's preface in the completed reprint is dated 1 Dec 1830. Further details on the history of the printing of the book are found in the letters from A. Guillemin to A.P. de Candolle, now at Genève. Guillemin acted as an intermediary between the two authors who were both engaged on the Rubiaceae (de Candolle, Prodr. 4, Sep 1830, Rubiaceae). On 17 Jan 1830 Guillemin reports that 4 sheets had been printed ("généralités") and would be sent to de Candolle. On 8 Jun 1830 Guillemin, who took care of the printing of the fourth volume of the *Prodromus* at Paris, mentions to de Candolle that since the order of treatment of Richard is different, de Candolle would benefit only to a limited extent from the proofs. He sends the uncorrected proofs of the 20-23rd sheets. Richard's preprints were prepared in a very limited number for a few friends. Guillemin inserted the references to Richard in the proofs of the *Prodromus*. On 2 October 1830 Guillemin writes that he has at last received the first 15 copies of the fourth volume of the Prodromus from Wurtz (the printer and publisher). The 15 copper-engravings are of drawings by A. Richard. A second botanical part by Richard came out only in the Spanish edition (vol. 11). We treat here only the French edition and refer to the treatment under Sagra, Ramon de la, for further details. *French ed*.: p. \[i\]-viii, \[1\]-663. *Copies*: BR, G, NY, MICH; IDC 5707. – For the atlas (whole series) see under Sagra; it does not seem to have been finished before 1851. It remains unclear which edition has priority. Urban (1894) gives priority to the French edition, but Montagne (Ann. Sci. nat. ser. 2. vol. 17: 119. 1842) definitively states that "on ne publie les feuilles de cette édition (i.e. l'édition française) qu'après que celles de l'édition espagnole ont paru". This may refer only to the cryptogamic volume (see Montagne) but may also have applied to the phanerogamic part. Urban's argument is that the Spanish version contains corrections and additions to the French one. A. Richard writes to Bentham on 22 Mai 1843 that his work on the Sagra plants is finished "mais une partie seulement a été publiée."... "Pour les mousses 21 feuilles ont été imprimées et publiées. 41 ou 42 planches in folio ont été publiées. Lors de mon voyage à Londres il y a quinze mois, j'ai remis à M. M. Brown, Hooker et Lindley le commencement de cette publication."
