Phelps, Almira (previously Lincoln, née Hart or Heart) (1793-1884), American popular writer on botany and teacher at the Troy Female Seminary; from 1838-1841 in charge of a seminary in West Chester, Pa., from 1841 id. of the Patapsco Female Institute, Ellicott City, Md.; married Samuel Lincoln 1817, John Phelps 1831.

Almira Heart \[Hart\] was born 15 Jul 1793 in Berlin, Conn.; she married (1817) Simeon (?) Samuel Lincoln, who died in 1823; in 1823 she married John Phelps, who died 1847. Mrs. Phelps herself died at Baltimore, Md., 15 Jul 1884. In her dedication on 20 Apr 1829 to her mother, in the *Familiar lectures*, she spelled her mother's name Mrs. Lydia Heart. The spelling Hart occurs in later sources.
